A steaming bowl of chili with a cinnamon roll on the side? Oh yes, this sweet and spicy combo is a favorite in Nebraska.

So what is this combo all about?

We usually have a savory bread roll or cornbread with chili, right? Well in Nebraska, and Iowa too, they serve a cinnamon roll. Legend has it, this duo came to be in Iowa elementary school cafeterias. Local women took up jobs in the lunchroom and cooked what they knew best. Two the hearty staples that the kids loved turned out to be chili and cinnamon rolls.

The pairing became a staple in these two states, even making appearances on local chain menus. While it might seem odd, we love the thought of dunking a sweet roll into spicy chili. Plus, a touch of cinnamon in chili is often a secret ingredient in most home cook’s recipes and this combo marries them in a whole new way.
